 Shaoxing
is one of the first 24 famous historic-cultural
cities of China announced by the State Council
of China and one of the first¡°Excellent Tourist
Cities of China¡± nominated by the State Tourism
Bureau of China. Shaoxing is famous for its beautiful
landscape and rich cultural relics and is well
known for its celebrities, calligraphers, water
ways, bridges and yellow wines.
Shaoxing has cultural relics of all ages at 3,600
locations and has 35,000 pieces of cultural relics
collected by the state. There are 192 protection
units of cultural relics in Shaoxing, of which
4 are key protection units at national level,
46 at provincial level. The Mausoleum of Yu the
Great, the platform of King of the Yue State,
the Orchid Pavilion, the Shen Family Garden, the
Green Vine Study, the former residence of Lu Xun,
the ancestral residence of Zhou Enlai, the former
residence of Cai Yuanpei are examples well known
both at home and abroad. The profound accumulation
in culture makes Shaoxing worthy of the name of
a¡°Museum Without Walls¡±.
Shaoxing is a glorious birthplace of a great number
of celebrities. There are not only touching love
stories, but also vigorous historical events.
Ancestral Yu the Great, Gou Jian, King of the
Yue State, Lu You, a great patriotic poet, Lu
Xun the writer, Qiu Jin the heroine, Cai Yuanpei,
the former president of Beijing University,
etc. are all celebrities of Shaoxing. Their high
and upright characters have passed on us spiritual
treasures that will last forever.
Beautiful and Poetizing Landscape Shaoxing is
well known to the world for its typical watery
landscape south of the Yangtzer River.For example,the
East Lake with upright rock walls around, which
is one of the three famous lakes in Zhejiang;
and the Kuaiji Mountain,majestic and elegant,
etc. More than 400 poets,including Li Bai, Du
Fu, Meng Haoran, paid visits to the landscape
of Shaoxing and left countless flowery poems.
Shaoxing has been a tourist resort since ancient
times.
